Jay,

Your passion for acting and improv makes you interesting. Keep doing it to the best of your ability. I wouldn't bother joining a bunch of clubs just for the sake of padding your applications. Colleges will see right through an insincere effort like that.

Also, colleges will know that you are competing with a pool of very talented students in Southern California, so don't worry too much about your ranking. (Top 5% is pretty awesome, by the way.)

Keep up the high grades and continue to deepen your commitment to acting and improve. Colleges prefer students who understand what it means to be truly committed to something. What that something is doesn't really matter. Good luck.

I', in the begginning of my Junior Year now. I used to do the school play, but i stopped doing that this year because i dont like it anymore. I've been doing an improvisation team at our school for my three years here. I dont really do any clubs besides drama stuff. I have good grades (4.0-4.2). I have used my improv thing outside of school and used it at my church. I still feel like i dont have enough stuff to get me into where i want to go. I dont know where that is at the time, but i see all my other classmates doing BS clubs and stuff just to get into college, and because i dont want to play that game i feel like i may be lacking. Are these little academic clubs really that important? Will my acting and improvising be enough to carry me onto college as far as extra curricular? What other kinds of clubs should i consider doing. My school has a mock trial club i was considering. Also i go to a school in Orange County with a lot of students and a lot of competition. Even in my district, i could be one of the top of my class at any other school, but im only top 5% at my school. How can i set myself appart from everyone else who has the same things?

I will become a Junior this fall, and I must say that I think it will be the toughest year out of my high school career. I have alot of additional academic courses, instead of taking "easy-electives". I hope to attend college in 2009... So hopefully everything will work out!

P.S- If you are a high school student, take it seriously because the years will fly by fast!

I have just entered my Junior year, and previously during my sophmore year I was completely lost about the preparation for college/universities. I didn't know what to do at all. And to be truthful, I was still pretty lost until now when I just looked over the guide you introduced. It was very explanatory, and actually aided me more than my counselor would have. I believe that all individuals who are planning and walking the same arduous path that I am, should take a look at this. Thank you so much for posting this. It's very informative and also alleviated most of the stress that I've been experiencing pertaining to the issue of me not knowing that to do, and the next level I'm trying to get ready for.
