Andrea,

Don't panic. November, December, and January SAT scores are all acceptable for regulary admission applicants. I recommend that you take the SAT in November and the Subject Tests in December. This will leave you with January as a back up, in case you want to take either test over again.

I hope this helps.

Dear Karl,
I'm going to try to make this short but I am in trouble, I am
currently about to be a senior this next school year and
I have taken the SAT last year and it wasn't horrible, but
I am looking for improvement. I have been studying for
the SAT subject tests I want to take because last school
year was too hectic for me to study for the subject tests.
The thing is that I am in marching band and we have a
competition on the October SAT date. So what should I do?
Take the november subject tests and december sat?
Or the other way around? Is it assured that my scores will
come in in time? I'm very worried. Im not applying
early decision anywhere, too risky for me.
I am looking mostly into Cornell University and New York
University. What is your best advice? Thank you very much.

Kathy,

The College Board's Score Choice policy will allow you to send the scores from the tests dates you choose. That being said, colleges will generally consider your highest scores only.

For example, let's say your scores are as follows:

March: Math 600, CR 580, W 620
May: Math 500, CR 520, W 600
June: Math 650, CR 550, W 630

You would send colleges the March and June scores only. The colleges would then consider
the Math 650 from June, the CR 580 from March, and the W 630 from June.

I hope this makes sense.

Scores from sophomore can be sent or withheld, by the way, just like the scores from any other test date.

The bottom line is that you should take the test again this fall, if you think you can do better.

Good luck.

Hi Karl,
I'm a little clueless about the SAT...
Let's say I take the SAT's 3 times, will all of my scores be sent even though colleges only consider the highest/ best one? Or can I choose my best score and just send that?
Also could you take the SAT's during sophomore year (10th grade) and if so, would that score officially count? Also if it was a really satisfying score could you turn that in to a college later on?
Thanks so much!

Leili,

If you are applying to the University of Maryland College Park as an out-of-state student, your chances of being admitted are pretty slim. If you are a Maryland resident, however, your chances are better. You need to spend your summer reading and building your vocabulary. If you manage to find the time to do so, you should take the SAT again in the fall. Don't worry about the fact that it will be your fourth SAT. Colleges will only consider you highest scores anyway.

Good luck.

Hi Karl,

I have just completed my juior year in high school and I have taken the SATs three times this year.
First time i took them:
M-510
R-510
W-510

Second:
M-590
R-500
W-560

Third:
M-640
R-520
W-530

My goal is to get accepted into University of Maryland College Park and on the collegeboard website it says they require Reading scores to be 580-680 and Math 620-710.

My math scores are pretty decent and I have been practicing and working hard to raise them but the reading is what I am having trouble with. Do you think it would be more beneficial for me to take the SAT once more fall of my senior year or would it be better to stick with the 520 and not the take SAT the fourth time. I am afraid if I take them four times it will so be too much but at the same time if I dont my reading score is not high enough and the three times I've taken them don't show much improvement. Thank you

Viraj,

The letters are probably based on your test scores (PSAT/SAT) and the information you have submitted to the College Board. While the correspondence from UPENN will not guaranty acceptance, it should encourage you to continue studying diligently and pursuing extracurricular interests.

Good luck.

Saumya,

Virtually all colleges will consider your highest combination only. Thus, you should send all of your SAT scores. Your composite is 2290. Congratulations. You did very, very well on the SAT.

Good luck.
